MOSSEL BAY NEWS -  The monthly Sector 1 meeting was held at the Mossel Bay Police Station's detective hall on Monday 14 September, during which the attendees were encouraged to join their local neighbourhood watch groups and play a role in keeping their communities safe.

The meeting's attendees included members of the Mossel Bay CPF, Upper Town and Lower Town neighbourhood watches, the Mossel Bay Police, Mossel Bay City Improvement District (CID), Alcatraz Security, Absolut Security, Skorpios Security, a representative of the Department of Social Development and a Transnet security guard.

They discussed various issues such as housebreakings and an increase in homeless people.

Everyone was warned not to leave valuables like lawnmowers, weed whackers or generators out in the open and to make sure their garage doors are locked. They were encouraged to report crimes, even when the perpetrator may be a homeless person or if property was stolen from their yard, as the police cannot do anything unless a case is opened.

The possibility of installing two new cameras in town was also discussed.
Suzette O'Brien, a member of the Mossel Bay CPF and the Lower Town Neighbourhood Watch, emphasised how important it was for the community to join their local neighbourhood watches. 

"A safe neighbourhood is not only created by the police or neighbourhood watch members alone, it is also built by a community that cares and gets involved," she said. "Together we can deter crime, support one another, and create neighbourhoods where families feel safe."

The police echoed these sentiments, saying that the community was the eyes and the ears of the police.
