MOSSEL BAY NEWS AND VIDEO - Mossel Bay resident Berenice Kogana has written a soul-baring book about divorce and single motherhood.
In it she describes her feelings of rejection, shame and self-hatred after her divorce.
Kogana has self published the book, titled Ek's uit! Moenie skroei nie, groei! (I'm out! Don't scorch, grow!)
Ek's uit refers to being "out of the fire". Divorce and the rigours of parenting on one's own are described by Berenice as a fiery trial in the book. But, as Berenice points out, one either comes out of the oven scorched (geskroei) and feeling like a victim, or victorious and having grown spiritually from the experience.
Berenice is a radio show hostess on EdenFM, she does YouTube video interviews with inspiring people to motivate women and last month she launched a non-profit organisation, The Myrtle Tree, to help single mothers.

She is active in her church and has also previously organised Gospel-centred conferences to encourage women.
The small book is fast paced and insightful. Berenice intersperses her account with Bible verses and wise sayings she herself has coined.
The account is an extraordinary insight into someone's personal, painful experience and illustrates how someone can seem strong and composed on the outside but truly suffering inside. It is also a lesson that everyone is unique and responds to circumstances differently from someone else.
