MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A road sign was put up on Louis Fourie Road at the weekend, stating that Industry Road (Industrieweg) in Voorbaai would be closed at the intersection with Louis Fourie Road from 19 to 28 August.
Mossel Bay Advertiser received a complaint about this, with the person asking how businesses could afford financially to be inaccessible for this period.
Mossel Bay Advertiser enquired to the Western Cape Department of Infrastructure.
Spokesperson Jandre Bakker said it is a partial road closure, to prevent thoroughfare, not a full road closure. He said motorists going to local businesses in Industry Road are allowed access via the intersection at Beach Boulevard East and Industry Road.
Bakker notes the road is open to all motorists who wish to visit businesses along this road.
He said the closure notice on the road meant “no thoroughfare”. This means road users are able to use the road from Beach Boulevard all the way to SSK Agriland Mossel Bay.
Bakker said: "Road users will just have to turn back towards Beach Boulevard as work is being done on the intersection at SSK Agriland Mossel Bay. Our thanks to the local businesses that were willing to accommodate temporary detours in an attempt to provide some road user relief."
Bakker notes the department is speaking to the contractor in order to change the boards to make it clear that it is about preventing thoroughfare and not a hard and full closure.
He says: "We would not do a hard closure on this road due to the number of businesses that would be affected adversely."
