MOSSEL BAY NEWS - On 1 April, iKhaya community development, sport and recreation centre started its latest outreach to the youth of the greater Mossel Bay area in Sonskynvallei.
The iKhaya organisation was started by Lazola Thole in 2020, when he was confronted with the dire needs of the community, especially among children.
Thole is a former boxer and passionate about keeping the youth busy in a constructive way through sport and recreation.
According to Thole, he chooses to develop sport in areas where there are no structured sports being played.
"I am always on the lookout for places where there are no planned activities and noticed that this is the case in Sonskynvallei."
He says he focuses on this type of development to prepare untrained athletes to be able to compete with others who belong to existing sport clubs.
The next step in his approach is to look for individuals who, in a particular community, like children and have the ability to successfully interact with them.
"I asked around in Sonskyn-vallei and met a lady who used to run a crèche. The children used to also gather at her house to play outside. We spoke and I equipped her with a ball and whistle to play netball with the children."
Thole himself plans on visiting Sonskynvallei weekly for boxing development.
"It will be great if we can supply the netballers with shirts or training outfits. Also, more balls and other sports equipment is needed."
He mentions that travelling to Sonskynvallei also poses a challenge.
Anyone who requires more information can contact Thole (081 031 2705).
iKhaya hosted its kick-off for 2022 on 29 January in collaboration with the Mossel Bay Municipality.
