MOSSEL BAY NEWS - At the Mossel Bay monthly town council meeting on 27 June municipal honours were bestowed on a number of councillors.
Aldermanship was bestowed previously on the executive mayor Harry Levendal and Speaker Petru Terblanche, both of whom have served the Mossel Bay Council for a considerable number of years. Both will receive Honorary Certificates as a result.
Aldermanship is conferred on serving councillors who are elected as mayor, deputy mayor or speaker.
Furthermore, the title is also bestowed on councillors who obtain a certain number of points depending on the number of years served as a councillor, with additional points awarded for every year served as a member of the mayoral committee.
Privileges
Apart from the title of alderman or alderlady, the recipients of the title receive preferential parking at the municipal building, and they continue to receive the council agendas in electronic format after their retirement, if so required.
The recipients remain on the municipal VIP invitation list and, if so wished, will receive preferential seating at council meetings they attend after retirement.
The honorary title will be supported by a special certificate.
Council accepted the recommendation to bestow the honorary titles to both councillors Dirk Kotzé and Marie de Klerk.
Councillor Dirk Kotzé qualifies as the serving deputy mayor to be awarded the title of alderman as he complies with the requirements of the by-law.
Likewise, Councillor Marie de Klerk meets with the minimum requirements considering previous years of service and membership of the executive committee. Mossel Bay's immediate previous mayor, Alderlady Marie Ferreira and councillors who have previously served and have contributed to the community and municipality - Raymond Skombingo (15 years, nine months), HJ Floors (10 years, five months) and O Kumalo (five years, two months) - will also receive a commendation certificate at an honorary ceremony at the council meeting in July.
The serving executive deputy mayor, Councillor Dirk Kotzé will be awarded aldermanship.
Soon Councillor Marie de Klerk will be addressed as alderlady.
Alderlady Marie Ferreira will soon be awarded a Council's Commendation Certificate.
