MOSSEL BAY NEWS -  Three families’ homes in Asla Park, KwaNonqaba and Ext 23 were recently given a bit of a make-over as repairs were carried out, smoke alarms were installed and unwanted items were cleared away thanks to the collaborative effort of various organisations.

The Mossel Bay Association of and for Persons with Disabilities (Mossel Bay APD) said uplifting the community and improving the lives of persons with disabilities was a Mandela Day initiative.

It was a collaboration between the APD, Mossel Bay Municipality’s Community Development Department, the Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management Services, Waste Management, the Department of Correctional Services, the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), the Mossel Bay Junior Town Council (JTC) and other community partners.

While the APD and the other departments and organisations were working on the three homes, another group from the Mossel Bay APD’s Daycare Centre and Peer Support Programme visited the Great Brak River community and served warm soup and freshly prepared sandwiches to the residents.

Speaking on behalf of the Mossel Bay APD, Logun Janse thanked every organisation and volunteer who contributed to the project’s success.

“We are deeply grateful to Mossel Bay Municipality and every department and organisation that partnered with us for this Mandela Day initiative. Your generosity, commitment and willingness to serve made a real difference in the lives of persons with disabilities and their families. Together we have shown what can be achieved when a community works towards a common goal.”

Janse said the initiative not only improved homes, but strengthened relationships between community organisations, government departments and volunteers. 

“Most importantly, it restored hope, dignity and a sense of belonging to families who needed it most,” he said.
