MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A Mossel Bay resident is among those who lost their lives in the George building disaster.
After the Neo Victoria disaster scene was officially handed over to police on Friday, 17 May, the final figures were released to the public.
While one of Mossel Bay's residents, Delvin Safers (29), miraculously survived and was retrieved from the rubble 25 hours after the initial collapse on 6 May, Zakhele Ntente (42), another Mossel Bay resident, was not that fortunate.
A resident from KwaNonqaba, Ntente was a foreman on the Neo Victoria luxury apartment site since the construction started in 2023.
His body was retrieved, identified, and handed over to his family on 13 May. A memorial service was held on Sunday, 19 May, at the Isalathiso Primary School in KwaNonqaba.
Ntente was originally from the Eastern Cape and the only breadwinner for his family. He leaves his wife Babalwa, and four children behind.
The workers on site were first estimated to be 75, then altered and adjusted to 81, and after the site had been cleared the official total was 62.
The death toll in the Victoria Street building disaster had risen to 34 after one of the victims died in hospital over the past weekend. That gives a total of 28 workers who survived the collapse.
The site has since been cordoned off with a green shade net. Once the police investigation is concluded, the site will be handed over to the Department of Labour for its investigation.
