GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Nine Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) firefighters are in Stellenbosch to commemorate International Firefighters Commemoration Day.
Firefighters will showcase their skills, techniques, and fitness at an event hosted by Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM). This event honours the sacrifices of firefighters worldwide and recognises their contributions.
The commemoration originates from the tragic deaths of five firefighters during a bushfire in Australia, inspiring JJ Edmondson to propose the holiday in 1999. The red and blue ribbon is a symbol of International Fire Fighters Day, representing fire and water elements and emergency services worldwide.
GRDM Mayor Memory Booysen said the municipality salutes all firefighters, and those who voluntarily assist them, for their passion, commitment, endurance and sacrifices.
