MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A 20-year-old fisherman had to be transferred to a National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) rescue craft after a fishing hook lodged in his left hand while he was onboard a fishing vessel on Wednesday, 5 March.
NSRI Mossel Bay Station Commander JC Roos said the NSRI duty crew were alerted to the injury of the young fisherman just before 13:30 that day.
Roos said the fishing crew were about 80 nautical miles offshore from Mossel Bay and had just lifted their fishing lines and were returning to Mossel Bay when the fisherman was injured.
The NSRI crew reached the fishing vessel when it was 16 nautical miles from shore. The fisherman was transferred to the NSRI craft in a stable condition.
He was then transported to a nearby hospital to have the fish hook removed. Roos said he is recovering.
