MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Transnet Engineering, the rolling stock manufacturer and maintenance division of Transnet SOC, is excited to be celebrating Heritage 2022 on Saturday, 24 September, with the community of Mossel bay, Western Cape.
What makes this celebration interesting is showcasing a 72-year-old steam locomotive that has not been functional for more than fifteen years. 'Amanda', a class 24. No 3632 is one of the remaining steam locomotives.
It was built by the North British Locomotive Co in 1949 and forms part of the 100-fleet class built for light lines to replace the ageing classes 6, 7 and 8. This locomotive is one of the last two class 24s to be overhauled by then Spoornet (now Transnet Freight Rail) in one of its Bloemfontein facilities.
The community at large will be granted an opportunity to ride this steam locomotive with a total of four passenger coaches. Four round trips have been planned in total from Hartenbos to Groot Brakrivier station.
Only four round trips will be held on the day, Only 1200 passengers can be accommodated in total. Only 1 ticket will be allocated to each person and the trip details are as follows:
• Trip 1 @ 10:00
• Trip 2 @ 12:00
• Trip 3 @ 14:00
• Trip 4 @ 16:00
