MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Last year was another successful year for the Blue Flag beach team, who flew the flag high on Mossel Bay’s four Blue Flag beaches during the December season.
For the past three years the Mossel Bay Municipality have partnered with Pinnacle Conservation, to create marine awareness regarding Blue Flag status, whilst adding a fun filled educational element.
Mossel Bay Municipality prides itself in its beaches, as does Pinnacle Conservation in doing environmental education. This year: Kleinbrak River, Hartenbos, De Bakke and Santos enjoyed the prestigious Blue Flag status, which is handed to beaches for cleanliness and safety, amongst others.
Various beach educational games were undertaken, as well as face painting for the smaller children. Free Blue Flag frisbees and rubber wristbands were designed and handed out to everyone who participated in the Blue flag activities.
The highlights of the marine programme included free surfing lessons by Andries Dunn and a drowning demonstration done by the NSRI and lifeguards. This was the second successful year that these two programmes were hosted by our own local Blue Flag team and it has proven to be a great hit among all beach goers.
Pinnacle Conservation encourageed all locals to continue to care about the local beaches and marine environment for this new year and keep beaches clean and beautiful.
This year various local service providers helped make this Blue Flag event a greater success than previous events. Role players who assisted include Kay Prinsloo (PC Trust), Andries Dunn (surfing), Andre Fraser and NSRI members and also the local lifeguards.
Now the challenge is out there to everyone to continue striving to preserve and conserve our coastline and our four beautiful Blue Flag beaches.
