MOSSEL BAY NEWS - During the Mossel Bay Municipality's Youth Day celebrations on Sunday, 16 June, Councillor Venolea Fortuin reiterated council's commitment to youth and the development of the youth.
She also said it was not always possible to keep everyone happy all the time, but with the appointment of a dedicated team, the Mossel Bay Municipality endeavoured to create a platform for opportunities and development of young people.
The celebrations featured, as in previous years, the final showdown in the Mossel Bay's Got Talent showcase.
Yanga Butani, junior town council member, called for the celebration of the young people of 1976 who fought against Bantu Education. She said this was not the fight of the youth of 2019, but that the fight was against depression, suicides, bullying, drugs and gangsters. The youth of 2019 should endeavour to create a future for themselves.
Guest artist
Jarrad Ricketts, an Athlone-born artist, who has been nominated for a South African Music Award (SAMA) and is an ambassador for the Cape Mental Health Society, was the guest artist of the day.
During his live performance, he not only entertained the crowd and kept them on their feet, he also shared about his struggles with depression and his struggles with getting into the music industry in South Africa.
He encouraged the 350 young people in attendance to never give up on their dreams and keep on fighting and pursuing their goals.
Jarrad was also involved in a workshop on 15 June with a group of local artists from Mossel Bay. He spoke on his journey into the music industry and gave input on their performances.
10 years celebrated
The highlight of the day was the 10th anniversary of the Mossel Bay's Got Talent Showcase.
The 2019 showcase was presented with six auditions - in Great Brakriver, Brandwag, D'Almeida, KwaNonqaba, the Mossel Bay Indoor Sport Centre and the town hall. The a semi-final was at the Bravo Lounge on 25 May and the grande finale on 16 June.
The 21 acts that went through to the grand finale worked hard. Coaches and judges invested time and skill in preparing the finalists, not just for the grande finale but for possibilities beyond the Mossel Bay's Got Talent showcase.
The showcase attracted singers with awesome voices, creative dancers and an open category (rappers and poets) with a contemporary message. The young artists provided for much of the entertainment of the day.
The winners in the different categories were as follows:
- Singing: 1st Shadows, 2nd Callen Lee and 3rd Amy
- Dance: 1st D'Trix, 2nd Sixx Style and 3rd Beat Slayers
- Open: 1st Crimson Hozay, 2nd JT and 3rd Rap Stars
The 10th season of the Mossel Bay's Got Talent showcase was presented by Mossel Bay Municipality and supported by the Department of Local Government (Community Development Workers' Programme), Garden Route Casino Community Trust, Bravo Lounge, Mossel Bay Home Ads News and Mossel Bay Advertiser, Harmony Sounds, Angeline's Dance Academy, Albert Wiffen and Crazy Creatures Boutique.
