LIFESTYLE NEWS - A 5km fun walk will be held on Saturday 25 May to help create awareness of lupus, an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system attacks normal, healthy tissue. The walk is organised by the Andrea's Gift support group George together with friends, families and colleagues, to commemorate World Lupus Day.
The Andrea's Gift Foundation believes it has a mandate to address the enormous issue of lupus. The foundation is named after Andrea Hughes, a lupus warrior. She did not live to see her vision realised, but her vision will not be shaken - a vision that adds value to the lives of lupus patients, and as a result enhances our society.
The foundation offers resources, visits, counselling, courses and support groups for those lupus-stricken patients who are in dire need of care. They refer to their patients as "lupus warriors" because they ignite the patients' hunger to overcome the effects of the disease through effective management. Their goal is to help lupus warriors transform their outlook and quality of life in a practical, authentic and relevant way.
The month of May is very special to lupus warriors as this is the month they raise a voice to people affected with lupus and spread awareness in and around our communities.
The 5km fun walk will take place at Unity Park (corner of Courtenay and York streets) at 10:00. Tickets can be purchased at the event, at R30pp and R20 for children under 12.
