MOSSEL BAY NEWS - At the Town Council meeting on 26 March approved contingency plans, should the electricity supply to town be interrupted for a prolonged period.
Council approved that water restrictions may be imposed as a precautionary measure, should the availability of electricity be interrupted for more than 48 hours to conserve water.
South Africa is experiencing significant electricity supply constraints and there exists a possibility that a portion of the electricity supply grid could experience a prolonged shutdown if there are multiple, simultaneous failures on the grid.
Should this happen, the operation of water service works and storage facilities will be detrimentally affected, as only plants/pump stations with standby generators will be functional.
This will consequently result in a significant reduction in the availability of potable water in most areas of the distribution networks and emergency measures will need to be implemented.
* No attached garden hoses or automatic irrigation equipment may be used
* Implementation and application of fines
* No hosing of structures, roofs and driveways and no filling of swimming pools
* Stricted policing and implementation of a complaint line and whistle blowers facility
* No watering of any sports fields permitted, and
* Consumers will not be entitled to the 6kl free water allocation.
As power interruptions may occur without notice, the Municipal Manager, in consultation with the Mayor is authorised to implement the above measures immediately after 48 hours of the outage period has lapsed.
