Each matriculant received a standing ovation in honour of their tenacity and success despite their individual circumstances and difficulties, an inspiration to all.
The challenges they faced ranged from receiving chemotherapy for lupus, very poor home conditions and losing their parents to severe visual impairments.
Jewel Jonkers, circuit 3 manager in the Eden/Central Karoo District, presented an acknowledgement scroll to each learner while Roger Jacobs, the head of Specialised Learner Education Support in the district, read a citation for each learner in appreciation of their diligence and commitment.
Some examples are Jason Mackay from George High whose mother passed away and he lives in severe, poor conditions; Ivanah Meyer from Point High School in Mossel Bay lived in difficult home circumstances with emotional difficulties.
Ivanah lost her father a few years ago and her mother had to go and work in Cape Town. Zazini Mihali from Murray High School in Plettenberg Bay stayed alone in a shack and supported herself in difficult social circumstances.
