Update
MOSSEL BAY NEWS - It was confirmed by both taxi associations operating in Mossel Bay that taxis will not be operating tomorrow, Monday 1 March.
Chairman of Codeta, Sipho Bokuva, and chairman of Uncedo, Songezo Bizwaphi, in Mossel Bay, both confirmed this.
They met at 14:00 on Sunday, 28 February and decided on the halt in operations tomorrow, 1 March.
On enquiry from the Mossel Bay Advertiser, Bizwaphi said this was in sympathy with drivers who were arrested on Friday. Taxis were impounded on Friday for contravening traffic regulations.
Bizwaphi said: “Some of the drivers – not all – did not know why they had been arrested. Also, why were the impounded taxis sent to George?” he asked. “How are we going to get the taxis back?”
He said the taxi owners were not operating tomorrow because they wished to show solidarity with the drivers who had been arrested and who were appearing in court tomorrow.
He claimed the taxi drivers had been treated unfairly by police on Friday.
“We want to see what happens with the court case,” Bizwaphi said.
