MOSSEL BAY NEWS - There are certain specialist shops and businesses which are mainstays in the Mossel Bay community, providing a valuable service and essential items, usually at reduced prices.
Also of convenience is the fact one can buy items in bulk from these suppliers.
These shops include the fresh fish shops, cheese shops and butcheries.
Some of them are closed during the lockdown and this is a significant loss to consumers. The Cheese Etc stores at Agriland in Voorbaai and at the Langeberg Mall provide cheeses and butter much more inexpensively than at other stores. These two stores are closed during the lockdown.
Vredebest Packaging in Voorbaai provides baking goods such as raisins, nuts and cocoa powder at greatly reduced prices and in bulk quantities - and it is closed.
Tollies Butchery, which is usually extremely busy and has a wide range of meat and meat products and poultry, priced to suit different pockets, is also closed throughout the lockdown.
Fish shops
The fish shops - Catchalot in Voorbaai and Viking Fish Shop in Bland Street in the town centre - have remained open.
Also open during the lockdown is Gastao's Quality Foods in Voorbaai, which supplies foods in bulk amounts to caterers, restaurants and hotels, but is also open to the public.
Also, Die Broodmandjie bakery in Da Nova, is still open during the shutdown. The bakery bakes a selection of breads.
Die Broodmandjie manager Colin Middleton told the Mossel Bay Advertiser: "We are open, with strict limitations. Our hours are 06:00 until 15:00 during lockdown. We bake bread, rolls and a few cakes and we sell electricity and airtime.
"We bake limited quantities of our products because we don't want waste. Anything that is left over from the previous day we donate to the homeless shelters and the police for distribution to needy people. Our mission is to supply fresh bread everyday, if possible, to our clients, who are all "walk-ins".
"We don't deliver except to the old age homes. They get a list together and phone us and we make up a parcel, sterilise it and deliver it to the security guards at the gate. We don't do personal, private deliveries, only the old age homes."
