GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The five most common venomous snakes in our area are the Cape cobra, rinkhals, boomslang, puff adder and berg adder.
Bite-size information to keep in mind:
The cobra is mainly a ground snake. It may enter homes close to grassy areas, in an attempt to escape the heat. Cobras have even been spotted on the beach.
Like cobras, the rinkhals will spread its hood when it feels threatened. If that threat doesn't move, it might spray venom.
The boomslang is very shy and seldom seen. However, it's one of the most venomous snakes found in South Africa.
The puff adder is responsible for most snake bites, because it uses camouflage so well and because it is easily stepped on.
The berg adder will hiss loudly when threatened. Its bite is rare and not often fatal.
