MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Last month there were complaints from Mossel Bay residents because a decades-old palm tree was cut down on a property on George Street, overlooking Santos Beach.
Those who called the Mossel Bay Advertiser said it was an iconic tree and a landmark in Mossel Bay, however, the owner of the property explained that the root system was breaking down a historic stone wall on the property, apparently built by Italian prisoners of war and should the wall fall over, the expertise to rebuild it was not available nowadays.
The property owner said he would poison the remaining stump so that the roots would die in order to try to save the wall. The Mossel Bay Advertiser published an article on this last month.
On Tuesday, 7 May, the second large, old palm tree on the property was being chopped down. A member of the public called the Advertier to complain about it.
