MOSSEL BAY NEWS - With adverse weather conditions seemingly on its way, newborn seal pups may be washed off Seal Island in Mossel Bay when waves crash onto and over the rocks on the island.
This is according to the Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team (S.M.A.R.T).
The organisation says on its Facebook page, the pups are not very good swimmers yet and tides may carry them onto our beaches.
“This phenomenon may continue to occur from now until the end of December 2021.”
What to do:
- Do not chase/put them back into the water (they may drown)
- Do not touch them - they are born with teeth
- Don’t throw water over them - they don't need water and their little bodies are probably already very cold
- Contact S.M.A.R.T immediately on 072 227 4715
