This is the second year running that the service clubs of George have joined together to bring joy to the lives of children who might otherwise never have the opportunity to experience the excitement of flying in an airplane.
The Santa Flight is the brainchild of Rick Clutton of the Eden Lions Club. Negotiations began early this year with representatives from the Eden Lions, George Lions, George Rotary, George Round Table, Outeniqua MOTHS, George Vryburgers and Garden Route Ladies Circle, to co-ordinate a Christmas party unlike any other.
100 children were selected by the various service clubs for a once-in-a-lifetime trip in an airplane over the skies of George, followed by party refreshments, games and a visit from Santa himself, who arrived in style in an airplane.
This project would not have been possible without the generosity of the George Flight Training College and Phillip Gibbs, who were responsible for the flights for all the passengers. Five light aircraft, flown by Gibbs and pilots of the George Flight Training College, took to the skies, ferrying the guests of honour on more than 25 flights. The George Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA), under the management of Brenda Moses, contributed to the success of the event by waiving all airport fees.
The aim of this event is to show children from all walks of life, that with the right opportunities and attitude to life, the sky truly is the limit. For more information on projects done by the service clubs, contact PRO Carl van Blerk on 082 826 0731.
