MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A young rapper from Joe Slovo, well known in local music circles, suffered terrible loss in a fire at his home last weekend. Brian Selethisa, who performs under the name Smash, returned home on Friday night, 25 August, put down his equipment and went out again straight away to buy electricity, when he was alerted that his house was on fire.
"I was on my way down to De Bakke, when I received the call that the house was burning. I wasn't in time to save anything."
Selethisa says that everything inside the house was destroyed and that the roof had severe structural damage. The cause of the fire is still unknown. There was no one at home when the fire started.
"I lost everything regarding my music as well. My hard drive, computer. Everything is gone." Selethisa has been part of the local music scene for the past 10 years and regularly shares the stage with other well-known local rappers such as Andile Citashe of Smalls, as he is popularly known.
Unemployed at the moment, his house was his livelihood as he leased rooms to people in need of accommodation. "I was expecting temporary staff from Johannesburg, working during the shutdown at PetroSA this week. The fire has really ruined my plans of earning an income for the next three months as planned."

He is, however, grateful, that the fire did not start while he was at home later that evening and asleep.
"It is a terrible setback, but my music helps me get back on my feet."
