During the ceremony, acting mayor, Alderman Dirk Kotzé, said he had confidence in the town's youth leaders and described them as a dedicated group.
"With Covid-19, our young people face unprecedented challenges, and our learners had to adapt to changing, challenging circumstances virtually overnight. I am proud of our youth leaders. They have proved that no challenge is too great when tackled with focused dedication.
"Today, you receive due recognition as junior councillors. May the experience be a valuable learning curve so you will soon also have a confident influence on the social agenda as fully-fledged community leaders.
"I proudly hand you the badges that will identify you as junior councillors. Wear them with pride."
The young councillors also received branded T-shirts.
