MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Annually, worldwide, museums commemorate International Museum Day on 18 May.
In celebration of this, locally, the Dias Museum hosts its yearly English Speech Contest.
Last year, due to Covid-19, this popular event could not take place. However, it is back in full force, with the first round taking place on 18 May at 16:00 at the Dias Museum.
As in previous years, all the speech topics focus on museums and their importance in the community. Participation is limited to high school learners in Grade 10 and 11, studying English as their first additional language.
The contestants who come first, second and third will receive a floating trophy and will also qualify to take part in the gala speech contest later in the year.
Participating museums for the gala event are the Bartolomeu Dias Museum (Mossel Bay), CP Nel Museum (Oudtshoorn), George Museum and the Beaufort West Museum.
The schools invited are: Point High School; Great Brak Secondary; Hillcrest Secondary; Sao Bras Secondary; Indwe High; Langenhoven High; Gerrit du Plessis Secondary; Albertinia High; Curro: Mossel Bay; Oakdale Agricultural High; and Heidelberg High School.
At the final gala contest, cash prizes will be given for the top three learners. All participants receive a certificate. Participation is free.
