GREAT BRAK NEWS AND VIDEO - Western Cape MEC for Agriculture, Ivan Meyer paid an oversight visit to a vegetable garden at the Great Brak Secondary School in Mossel Bay today, Tuesday 21 June.
The garden was launched a year ago and Meyer visited the school to ensure that everything is still on track.
The department of Agriculture donated more than R130 000 for seedlings and infrastructure to the garden.
Meyer says they are supporting vegetable gardens at schools but also wants to create a passion for agriculture amongst learners.
He says he would like to connect learners with agriculture in this way.
Meyer says access to food and the increase in its affordability is a threat to the consumer and that It will lead to a rise in food inflation and more significant pressure on food security and nutrition.
For this reason, the Western Cape Department of Agriculture encourages households and communities to produce food sustainably and respond to the challenges of household food insecurity.
