MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Earlier this week at Youth Day celebrations hosted by the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), the scourge of gender-based violence was firmly placed on the agenda.
Today, 16 June to add impetus to initiatives intended to address the prevalence of these crimes, the Men’s Sector was established in Mossel Bay.
This follows a resolution by Parliament that the Men’s Sector must be institutionalised at local government level.
The Mossel Bay Men’s Sector, which will address many issues regarding gender-based violence and femicide, was established in the D’Almeida civic hall today. The Garden Route District Men’s Sector is already in existence.
In her speech at the event this morning, Director of Community Services, Elize Nel referred to the DCS event. She said that she is pleased that Mossel Bay, through the establishment of the Men’s Sector “can become part of the vaccine to cure the GBV pandemic”.
“What we need is the will to do it, the commitment and the leadership. All we need, is a small group to start and take action. The commitment is here and so is the leadership.”
