This was the reaction of executive mayor, Alderman Harry Levendal, as he paid homage to the exemplary teachers of the various schools in the Mossel Bay district who have not forsaken their learners despite the uncharted territory brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Levendal specifically congratulated Ivan Kroneberg, principal of Hillcrest Secondary School, having received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Western Cape Education Department.
Kroneberg started his teaching career in 1987 and is still passionate about learning today. He is a change agent in education and a community builder with a staunch dedication to marginalised and disadvantaged learners of his community.
As a teacher, one of his primary aims from the start of his career was to build the self-esteem of learners and take them beyond their socio-economic environment which is having such a devastating effect on south African children.
With diversity being a top priority, Kroneberg is a driving force for diversity and multiculturalism at the school. This is manifests itself in the teaching of Xhosa, English and Afrikaans at Hillcrest.
Kroneberg is is not afraid to tackle the social challenges of drugs and gangsterism in his community. He is know for his excellent relationships with the governing body, community, parents and staff, which ultimately benefits the learners.

"Despite the unprecedented challenges of Covid-19, Hillcrest Secondary School still performs remarkably well.
"Mr Kroneberg initiated an innovative approach to teaching and learning that ensured all learners, including learners with barriers to learning, received quality teaching and learning," Levendal said.
Several other teachers from Hillcrest have received accolades, among them Lezaan Fourie, Vivric Slater and Mariaan Bester, who were recognised for their excellence in secondary school teaching.
Levendal thanked every teacher in the greater Mossel Bay area for going above and beyond the call of duty throughout this difficult time.
