Louis Fourie Road progress update

Update

MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The following activities will commence within the next two weeks on Louis Fourie Road.

Work on the approaches to the road-over-rail bridge situated between Hartenbos and Voorbaai will require the management of traffic during the construction activities. The traffic lanes will be narrowed to allow for the construction activities. We urge all road users to comply with the speed reduction as posted on the temporary traffic accommodation signage. This is to protect both the road users and the construction personnel and equipment during the construction of the new concrete approach slabs. Construction activities are expected to take seven weeks to complete.
The permanent traffic signals will be replaced with temporary signals. The signals will have the same timing, as such the current sequence of movements will remain the same. The signals will be transferred incrementally such that all intersections will be operational while this is undertaken. In the instance where all the signals need to be switched off to facilitate the removal of the existing traffic signals, work will then happen outside of peak traffic periods and a pointsman will be in place to facilitate the flow of traffic.
The existing raised central medians between Park Crescent and Beach Boulevard intersections and at the Mall intersection (Albert Street and Louis Fourie Road) will be removed and replaced with asphalt.
The eastern side (direction to Mossel Bay Centre) of Louis Fourie Road at the intersections of Industry Way and Beach Boulevard East will be widened to create an additional lane (as shown by the green hatch in the image below). The widening of individual intersections will result in disruption to the current flow of traffic, but all efforts will be undertaken to minimise the possible affects. As each intersection will be dealt with individually, the appropriate signage will be erected to inform vehicle users and pedestrians as to what temporary traffic control measures can be expected. The Garret Street and Via Appie intersection widenings will commence shortly afterwards.
Pipe jacking will commence at the George Road intersection. While the works will not affect the movement of traffic, the public are asked to be aware of large tipper trucks that will be removing the excavated material. The public is further asked to keep their distance from the construction activities as these involve tunnelling and require the supervision of specially trained Individuals.
