HERBERTSDALE NEWS - Over the last couple of years, the small town of Herbertsdale has seen an increase in substance abuse among the youth.
The impact of drug abuse affects the community adversely and caused community leaders to act for change.
Nadia Jacobs-Julies and her Church Youth Team initiated a community outreach and joined Shameem November and the South Cape TVET College Student Support Services Department to uplift the community.
Nadia and her team are committed to creating healthier communities by empowering the youth through sports and skills development.
Their hope is to decrease substance abuse among the youth and bring positive change in the community.
Selwyn Kiewiet from South Cape TVET College, who grew up in Herbertsdale, inspired and equipped the youth at a self-governance workshop.
Selwyn encouraged them, saying it was possible to achieve anything if one could build one's self esteem from within.
He advised young people to build their character and self esteem from a young age.
"We must aim to keep our confidence strong although we are facing challenges and to be resilient, whatever comes our way," he said.
