MOSSEL BAY NEWS - 'Tis mighty "Movember" and if you don't have a moustache, consider growing one.
Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men's suicide.
According to Martyn Lovemore, it takes perseverance and dedication to be the owner of an impressive moustache. Lovemore, who with his partner owns a barber academy and several men's and ladies' hair salons, has joined forces with a prominent local business. Together, they are sharing their combined expertise in Mossel Bay, educating students interested in a barbering career.
"A fuller, well-groomed, neat moustache is always a head turner and conversation piece wherever I go."
His moustache has been a part of his life for the past five years. "The best characteristic of my moustache is the way in which I manage to twirl the ends."
This, he adds, only comes through daily styling and moustache styling aids.
Support
Since many of his friends and family suffered from some form of cancer, he fully supports Movember.
"It is certainly a good idea for men to participate. It raises awareness and enlightens oneself on the seriousness of going for regular checks to prevent getting cancer."
His top men's health tip is to regularly check for any form of lump which could appear in the testicles. "This is very easy to do yourself and will save you a lot of potential heartache."
Lee-Anne Roeloffze, service delivery coordinator for Cansa (Mossel Bay to Heidelberg), echoes this sentiment. "Early detection is key. Men in general are reluctant to undergo screening concerning their health. Cansa suggests that men should undergo PSA tests from 40 years of age."
Roeloffze says Covid-19 had a debilitating effect on Cansa's normal campaign activities in comparison to other years, but that it is currently out there, all guns blazing, to create as much awareness as possible.
"We are running finger prick tests to determine PSA levels in the blood and then do referrals accordingly. The tests are offered at clinics and we are also targeting businesses to do tests for people at work. The cost is R50, but the test is also available on a donation basis. We just want to test as many men as possible."
For more information, contact Roeloffze (078 742 1637) or Cansa's office in George (044 8744824).
Beyond Movember
According to Lovemore, the return of facial hair for men has undoubtedly become one of the biggest trends to hit the world.
"Men have embraced this wholeheartedly and when grooming men with facial hair it is quite obvious that the beard and moustache are like the Holy Grail. A haircut is important, but hardly takes priority over a good beard and moustache shaping."
For the guy that wishes to keep his moustache after Movember, Lovemore suggests making sure he finds the correct products to keep the moustache in good order.
"Be patient with the growth of the hair and use the perfect wax to keep the moustache in your desired style."
