MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Cameron Dugmore, leader of the official opposition in the Western Cape Legislature, visited the Mossel Bay, attending various schools on the first school day of 2020.
Dugmore has been asked by the African National Congress in the Western Cape to service Mossel Bay. He will be responsible for the Mossel Bay constituency until 2024.
On Wednesday, 15 January, Dugmore went to the Eyethu Clinic in Joe Slovo. He also visited the Siyanithanda Educare Centre. Dugmore, who previously worked for the Hessequa constituency, says his parents live in Great Brak River and he attended school in George.
He, therefore, knows the area and has personal ties with Mossel Bay. Dugmore says schools are critical in any community and he says he picked up challenges at certain schools in Mossel Bay.
"I went to see what the issues were and we will address them." I will build relationships with all spheres of government and will therefore visit the mayor of Mossel Bay later today," he said at the time of his visit. "This is the beginning of my constituency work in the Mossel Bay community."
Schools in need
He visited Hillcrest Secondary School, Imekhaya Primary, TM Ndanda and Indwe Secondary School as well as Great Brak Secondary School.
"The schools were ready to receive learners. Key issues are safety at schools, with regards to fencing, and access control issues. Following the tragedy at Hillcrest, where a learner was stabbed to death, I know that a huge amount of work needs to be done on a safety level.
"We will also have to work with leadership skills inside the schools and build positive role models. Dugmore says Imekhaya needs additional classrooms and he says a sports facility at TM Ndanda is critical.
"There is no development of the open ground next to the school and if there is nothing else for children to do, such as sport, they do substance abuse and gang-related activities. I will work with the relevant departments to get all of this going and will raise the issues with the Education Department."
