MOSSEL BAY NEWS - In making sure that all South Africans feel free and safe, the Department of Correctional Services has launched its festive season campaign, Operation Vala.
The operation, to minimise assaults, unnatural deaths and escapes during this time of the year, was launched in Mossel Bay on Tuesday, 3 December.
The operation entails random searches at Correctional Services facilities and parolees' and probationers' premises and visiting care givers and ensuring that all is well at their homes and that in fact conditions are being adhered to.
The programme also focuses on ensuring that offenders are kept busy and idleness is curbed.
Unscheduled visits by all managers from senior correctional official and higher, as well as teams from the regional office, will be conducted during Operation Vala.
The aim of all these visits will be for senior management to be more visible and to assist in the prevention of escapes, attempted escapes, assaults, unnatural deaths as well as any other serious security incidents and breaches.
During the launch this week, various roleplayers and stakeholders, including the members of the neighbourhood watch, attended a briefing at the Mossel Bay Correctional Youth Centre and from there, moved into the community on foot to implement the project.
