MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Five Mossel Bay residents, including two children, died in a horrific head-on collision on Louis Fourie Road on Wednesday night.
A sixth victim, a child, also from Mossel Bay, was taken to a George hospital, but was declared dead on arrival. Twelve others were injured in the crash.
Emergency services went to the scene at the intersection of Louis Fourie Road and the Dana Bay offramp of the N2 at about 21:00.
When Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management Services arrived at the scene they found three women and two children dead and other passengers with multiple injuries.
One of the deceased was a woman who was travelling in a Fidelity Guarding Services bakkie. The other deceased were travelling in a Ford Icon sedan.
The driver of the Ford was taken to hospital with multiple injuries.
Mossel Bay Municipality spokes-person Cornelle Carstens says some of the passengers were trapped inside the Ford.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies says a preliminary investigation suggests that the bakkie was travelling in the direction of Mossel Bay when the Ford Icon turned right to enter the N2 offramp. Spies says the passengers and driver of the Ford Icon were travelling to the Eastern Cape.
KwaNonqaba Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairman, Shadrack Shishana, released a statement shortly after the accident. "It is with great sadness that we learnt about the accident in which six residents of Mossel Bay lost their lives. On behalf of the KwaNonqaba CPF I convey our deepest sympathy to the families affected."
The identities of the deceased had not yet been released at the time Mossel Bay Advertiser went to press.
KwaNonqaba Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving.
