MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Cameras in strategic locations in Mossel Bay are assisting the police and community forums to fight crime in the area.
This was proved on Friday, 2 October, when suspects who were linked with a burglary in Riversdale, were caught by police just outside Oudtshoorn after the getaway vehicle was noticed on a camera in Marsh Street, Mossel Bay at 06:51.
Volunteers who monitor the cameras reported the information to nearby police stations and at 09:30 police stopped the Volkswagen near Oudtshoorn.
The suspects tried to escape by driving in the opposite direction when they arrived at a road block but were caught in a joint operation.
Mossel Bay municipal spokesperson Nickey le Roux says this has once again proved that the municipality's proposed joint control centre will be invaluable in expanding the council's community safety strategy.
"Mossel Bay Municipality recently made changes to its macrostructure so that a component will specifically address community safety and the joint control room envisaged will form an important part of this component," Le Roux says.
"The control room, with advanced technology, will ultimately contribute to better coordination and integration of operations and cameras and strict compliance with all relevant protocols will benefit not only Mossel Bay but the greater region."
The three men were arrested and will remain in custody until their first court appearance.
