MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Mossel Bay Municipality has made special arrangements to allow everyone access to electricity during the national lockdown.
There are special initiatives regarding prepaid electricity purchases during the lockdown.
Where consumers can buy electricity vouchers
All the usual prepaid electricity purchase points that also sell essential goods, such as groceries, are open. This includes large supermarkets, spaza shops that normally sell electricity and several filling stations.
If you do not want to leave your home, online options are available.
Residents can buy electricity directly from their electronic banking services platform. Unfortunately for Standard Bank customers, this option is not yet available.
The other electronic option is PrePaid24. Register on this electronic platforms and you may never have to drive to a store again in the middle of the night for electricity.
The only option not available during the 21-day restriction is the municipal cashier points.
Indigent households
Normally, the municipality sends a text message every month to indigent households with their free 50 or 25 units of electricity.
Unfortunately, the municipality does not have everyone's cellphone numbers and since a cellphone number is something that changes frequently, it happens that some of these households do not receive the SMS.
An indigent household can go to any of the points of sale and ask them for the free units for the month.
Free units will also appear on the household's first purchase slip for the month.
New initiative
The municipality's service provider, Utilities World, has launched a new initiative to assist registered indigent households during the lockdown.
Now indigent households can get their free units on their phone irrespective of where they are by merely calling * 120 * 1779 #. Then select option 1 for "FBE Token". Then enter your meter number and press send.
The "token" number will then be sent to that phone via SMS. Have a look at the schematic illustration of how this works.
The municipality has also worked with Utilities World to prevent residents from being exploited by suppliers who charge extra when purchasing electricity.
Indigent households can now access their free electricity using a cellphone.
