Police have since confirmed that Mossel Bay Police station’s ace detective Captain Tekkie van Rensburg, has on Friday night, 7 April at 22:00 arrested a suspect on suspicion of the murder of Michaels in D’Almeida.
At the time it was thought that Michaels’ death may have resulted from her falling down the sheer cliff face at a cave south of Cecil Shephard Street, close the Point.
Michaels (35) was with two other people in one of the caves often used by fishermen where they were planning to spend the night. After an apparent disagreement, Michaels then left the cave. According to a witness, this was the last time that she was seen alive. Traces of blood was later found on a ledge below the cave.
A massive search, including extensive foot patrols as well as the use of boats and a helicopter followed the initial report of a missing person and the Mossel Bay Police Station opened an inquest docket. This has since been changed and Capt Van Rensburg has charged the suspect (40) with both murder and defeating the ends of justice.
