MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Times have been called strange, but they are exciting nonetheless.
Of this Danica Barnard, a Mossel Bay model and multiple beauty pageant title holder can testify.
Covid-19 did not prevent Danica's long awaited dream of being named both Miss Universal South Africa 2020 and Miss 7 Continents SA 2020.
"I am grateful for everyone's support. Winning this title was my dream for six years and finally I've won it," says Danica. Apart from these top accolades, she also earned a few special awards best interview, best ramp model, best evening wear, best interview wear and best themed wear". Danica's international title, Miss 7 Continents, is a qualifier for her to represent South Africa in Turkey in 2021.
Due to Covid 19, the annual pageant was held via Zoom, Skype, videos and photo submissions. This afforded the adjudication panel the opportunity to carefully scrutinise every aspect of each contestant. Adjudicators made a point of stopping, replaying and zooming in on photos to select the winner.
A wrong turn or simple slip, which may have escaped a judge's eye, was now on full display for the full week's judging.
"With the interviews held over Zoom, it was nerve wracking not to be able to see the judges face to face and see their reactions," Danica said
Danica said Covid-19 took away enough from people, hence she decided to go all out and take every opportunity in spite of the lockdown.
She will be donating her prize money to the Be Your Dream charity project (BYD).
"Be Your Dream is an initiative started by South African artist, Anaïs, in association with LifeLine South Africa. BYD is a LifeLine awareness project where we go out to schools, churches, businesses and more, spreading the message of LifeLine. We focus on emotional wellness in our communities. "
Danica has just completed her diploma in child psychology and will graduate from UNISA with her B Ed degree early next year. She is excited to continue with her passion of working with children.
