MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Autism now affects 1 in 68 children. That is why people worldwide are being mobilised to commemorate World Autism Day on 2 April, as declared by the United Nations.
The Education and Training Hub for Autism Needs (ETHAN), together with their school partners; Leolan, Siyanithanda Disabled Child Care Centre, Zettie Jonker Hulpsentrum are doing their bit to raise awareness in the greater Mossel Bay.
"We are joining a global campaign to encourage people to Light it Up Blue for Autism in April," says Dianne Hobbs, director of ETHAN (Education and Training Hub for Autism Needs).
April is commemorated globally as Autism Awareness Month.
Most notably, Autism Speaks, the largest autism non-profit challenges communities and iconic buildings across the globe to 'Light it Up Blue' for Autism. In doing so, huge landmarks like the Empire State Building, Eiffel Tower, Sandton Tower, Table Mountain have been lit up in blue for these periods during April. Families are encouraged to show their support for autism by lighting up blue at their homes.
"Entrance is free and those in attendance are in for something truly special."
On 15 April, The Big Autism Thing Night Walk takes place. This event is similar to the Big Autism Thing, a walk from Durban to Cape Town in 2012, during which a group of hikers raised awareness and funds for autism.
Entries are R30 per person, R100 per group of four, with each entrant receiving a blue light stick.
"For the keen golfers, we are also hosting a Charity Golf Day on 2 May at Pinnacle Point Golf Estate."
