MOSSEL BAY NEWS AND VIDEO - A successful auction to raise funds for the Alzheimer's SA Southern Cape branch was held on Saturday, 26 May.
Although a handful of Mossel Bay businesses and private individuals supported the auction, those who attended bid generously and Alzheimer's SA was extremely pleased with the funds raised.
Alzheimer's disease has become more and more prolific. The latest statistics from the United States are that one in six women aged 60 and over have a lifetime risk of developing Alzheimer's.
This is far more than cancer, for which the equivalent statistic is one in 11.
There is much work for Alzheimer's SA in raising awareness, supporting families of Alzheimer's sufferers through advice and counselling and training those who care for Alzheimer's patients.
More places for Alzheimer's sufferers in Mossel Bay are planned for the near future. Property developers and specialists in Alzheimer's care are working on providing more beds in at least two suburbs in town currently.
Mossel Bay companies were generous in their donations for the auction which included meal vouchers, wine, holiday accommodation, a game drive for two, beauty treatments and even fashion eyewear.

Artworks on the auction all sold.
It was a fun occasion, with Selwyn Barnard of Vredebest Auctioneers creating a vibrant atmosphere with his jokes and motivating bidders to dig deep in their pockets. Vredebest did the auction for free.
The Café Gannet Restaurant provided its Ochre Venue for free for the event and it made for an elegant, tasteful experience. There were special touches provided free by Café Gannet - welcoming drinks and takeaway packets of the chef's special biscotti for each guest.
There was even some singing at the auction - or rather humming. Guests had to guess the names and artists of three songs chosen for the Alzheimer's SA theme - Vergeet om my te vergeet by Laurika Rauch, Unforgettable by Nat King Cole and Memories by Barbara Streisand.
A number of guests retired to the Gannet Restaurant after the auction to enjoy the Saturday specials.
Alzheimer's SA Southern Cape thanks all those who attended and supported the auction.
See the Mossel Bay Advertiser on Friday for a letter thanking all the sponsors of and contributors to the auction.
