MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The African National Congress (ANC) caucus of the Mossel Bay Municipality has criticised the increase in tariff for a grave, from R1 600 to R6 000, for an adult. It amounts to an approximate 500% increase.
The ANC voted against the budget and said it was not a reflection of the living standard of the poor. "This budget manifested that the DA-led council did not even care for families who were in distress because of death," the ANC said. "This is how it will effect our people: there will now be a drastic decrease in the value of their funeral policies. A R6 000 deduction for a grave will hardly allow cover for other funeral expenses.
"The ANC caucus calls on the DA-led council to reconsider this tariff increase particularly. It is inhuman and not sensitive to the poor," ANC chief whip, Councillor Jovan Bruinders, said.
The increase for registered indigent households is considerably less.
