MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Mossel Bay Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit has received the national award for the third best FCS unit in South Africa.
The unit commander, Capt Geoffrey Gordon, received this prestigious award during the Action Indaba on Gender-Based Violence and Protection of Vulnerable Groups in Pretoria on 18 August.
The FCS unit, which was re-launched in 2010 after being absorbed into the greater police service in 2006, has since doubled its resources and now has 176 units and close to 2 500 members nationwide.
In addition, the FCS employs a network of highly-skilled forensic social workers to assist with the assessment of abused children and the compilation of court reports, as well as provide an expert testimony in court.
The FCS is involved in the policing of sexual offences against children, person-directed crimes (where the family is involved), illegal removal of children under 12 and electronic media-facilitated crime. The award is based on performance and the number of successful prosecutions.
"I am so proud of my team members. Each and every one of them work extremely hard. Together, we really are making a difference," Capt Gordon says.
