MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A fire that raged at Gouritzmond on Saturday was extinguished overnight and a new fire was reported at Droëvlakte in the Still Bay area on Sunday afternoon.
Firefighters from Eden District Municipality and Hessequa Fire Services tackled this blaze.
Firefighting teams from Hessequa and Eden district municipalities and Working on Fire worked through the night to contain and extinguish the fire at Gouritzmond, which at one stage threatened infrastructure in the area.
Firefighters on Sunday remained on the scene to monitor the area.
The fire that had been raging for several days in the Oudtshoorn region in the Swartberg mountain continued, with some areas, such as the north-east line proving difficult to contain as there was no access.
On the southern line a successful backburn was put in from east to west by the early afternoon on Sunday.
The fire was regarded as being mopped up mostly, Eden District Municipality spokesperson Herman Pieters said, although patrolling and monitoring would continue with the assistance of Cape Nature.
