BUSINESS NEWS - The first Saturday of every July sees the return of one of South Africa’s most iconic and fashionable horse races the Durban July taking place.
This year the thoroughbred horse race event is bringing out all of the stops to entertain the 50 000 guests visiting on the day.
The venue is as always is the Greyville race course situated in Durban which will host the final 20 horse race over a distance of 2200 meters.
The race is one of Mzansi’s oldest horse races having started over 100 years ago in 1897. The race as then shorter with a distance 1600 meters and only changed to the current distance in 1970.
The prize money up for grabs for the top horse and jockey is R5 million this year and the race cannot be tighter with so many amazing pairs around. It is about more than just racing for many of the visitors as they dress to be seen for the occasion.
The theme for this year’s event is “Show me the honey” with many of SA’s top local designers being invited showcase their ideas. Betway covers horse racing today from all corners of the globe including countries such as USA, New Zealand and UK.

There are a few favourite pairs that will be in running on the raceday. Kommetdieding which is in the racing for best horse of the year and won the Cape Met earlier this year will be there and is currently sitting with odds of 13:00.
Another contender to win one the big purse is no other that Jet Dark who won the L'Ormarins Queen's Plate earlier this year and is also in the race for best horse of the year, Jet Dark has a 15.00 odds for winner of the race at the moment. The odds for race winner are currently favouring, Safe Passage 4:50, Pomp and Power 7:50, Linebacker 7:50 and Sparkling Water at 7:50 for race winner.
