MOSSEL BAY BUSINESS NEWS - Not only Curro Mossel Bay, but the whole of Curro Holdings is beaming with pride at the news of Lara van Rooyen being accepted by one of the world's foremost academic institutions, Harvard University.
After having scored a 92.86% average she was named Curro Holdings' IEB top academic achiever of 2018.
Lara says she chose to go to Curro Mossel Bay because of its renowned IEB (Independent Examinations Board) curriculum. The IEB NSC is internationally recognised and equivalent to the UK AS level. South African learners who obtain the IEB NSC become members of a human resource pool that have the skills and knowledge to be successful competitors in the global economy. Lara adds that she soon realised that Curro Mossel Bay had much more to offer than just an excellent education.
"I will remain forever grateful for all the encouragement and advice. Each Curro student is truly regarded as an individual, and everyone was encouraged to become their own version of successful.
"I was blessed with teachers who supported me in my unconventional future plans and provided me with a wonderful educational experience."
She had long aspired to study in the United States, but never expected to be admitted to such a selective institution.
Lara says her only "secret" to success is consistency and dedication. "There are no shortcuts, and that is quite empowering - if you want it, you'll have to work for it."
At Harvard, she plans to take advantage of all the resources at her disposal and to seize all the opportunities available to her. "I plan to stay true to my roots, remain down to earth, and go to the other side of the world with an attitude of immense gratitude for the chance to do so, thanks to Curro Mossel Bay."
Lara is one of only 1 950 students accepted at Harvard College, the undergraduate programme of Harvard University, for the year, starting in August.
She hopes to major in biology or biochemistry, after which she will consider either going to medical school or becoming a research scientist.
