AGRICULTURAL NEWS - Wildlife Ranching SA’s (WRSA) Southern Cape chamber presents its first information day on 27 March.
The information day takes place on the eve of the first production game auction presented by Nico and Sonette Lerm on 28 March. Both events will take place on the Lerms’s Lasarus Game Farm, which is also home to 777 game breeders. The farm is 28km from Albertinia.
The information day aims to provide in-depth information about wildlife ranching to existing and potential game farmers in the Southern Cape. According to CapeNature, there are at present 120 farms with game on it in the Eden District.
Since its inception, WRSA Southern Cape has already gained 33 members, and WRSA officials will be in attendance on both days to help new members register.
The speakers at the information day include Dr Paul Lubout, from Wildlife Stud Services; Jacques van Rooyen, a lecturer at University Pretoria; and Craig Shepstone, a nutritionist.
Lubout’s presentation will focus on The role of genetics in successful game breeding.
Van Rooyen will discuss The Game Breeding Game: What are the rules of the game? This includes: principles of breeding and selection, the shift from ranger to rancher, game breeding: what we know and don’t know, record keeping and selection in game, and the future of the game industry.
Shepstone will discuss Nutrition for Game in the Karoo conditions.
The information day commences at 15:00, with Lubout’s lecture starting at 15:15, followed by van Rooyen and Shepstone. Time will be allowed for questions.
The barbeque fires will be lit at 18:00 and attendees are invited to enjoy a barbeque dinner of meat, chop and sausage, porridge and sauce, as well as homemade bread and jam.
The registration fee is R250 (spouses attend free of charge) and includes tea, coffee and water as well as the barbeque and what goes with it. Cash bar available for soft drinks and alcoholic beverages.
