The awards were hosted at the Barkly Street Theatre, Kariega (Uitenhage), on 16 May and showcased the work of filmmakers from countires like South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana and Sierra Leone.
The Mossel Bay Advertiser interviewed Lewis in December 2021 about his film, She Said No!, which deals with issues surrounding gender-based violence.
The film won several awards including Best Cinematographer and Best Film Director (Whanie Lewis), Best Actress (Tessyn Bloemiers) and Best Film Producer (Laurissa Savage).
Lewis reports that filmmakers from six countries participated.
"And it was great films from them all. Most of the films focused on societal issues in that specific country. My team and I received 10 different nominations and won five awards."
Lewis said that he is grateful for the awards.
"It doesn't make you rich, but it opens doors. I want to dedicate my awards to my peers, the people I grew up with and those who think they won't make it. Don't give up. Everyone has great potential and it is only you that can bring out what God has placed inside of you."
After She Said No!, Lewis released another three films, God Send, Trent and Aftermath.
"We are currently busy shooting a story I wrote when I was still a learner at Hillcrest Secondary School. It features lots of local talent and expertise. So look out for the new movie, Bloodline, due for release on 9 September, which is my birthday."
Lewis added that he will shoot most of the scenes in Mossel Bay.
"If there are people who want to be part of this production, contact us on 082 859 1216 or info@foolproof.co.za. We'll teach them on set, whether they have experience or not."
