GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Xhosa Prince Ntsika Sigcawu, in conjunction with the Bitou Municipality, will host a boxing tournament on 23 October at the KwaNokuthula community hall in Plettenberg Bay.
Two professional boxers from Mossel Bay will fight on the day.
Bulelani Ngondeka will fight Maqhawe Damoyi from 9 South African Infantry (9SAI) boxing club, based in Khayalitsha.
Mbulelo Gubula of Mossel Bay will fight Xolani Matana of Fish Hoek. In the Western Cape, Matana is ranked number one in the flyweight division and Ngondeka is rated number three.
"Although we are training under difficult conditions, we are aiming to put Mossel Bay on the map," says Masimphiwe Qatu, one of the coaches. "We do not have a venue for training and use shacks to train our boxers," he said.
Mbulelo Gubula is rated first in the Western Cape professional boxing under 50kg category.
The Garden Route Boxing Academy (GRBA) is a registered organisation, affiliated to the Eden Open Boxing Organisation and aims to develop boxing in Mossel Bay in general. It needs a proper training venue. Tiger Kai Academy offered to help but it is too far from the township for the boxers.
The GRBA is looking for a sponsor for boxing outfits for the boxers.
"The sponsor will be promoted everywhere we go," says Qatu. Anyone who can help can contact Qatu (064 099 1955 or masimhiweqatu@gmail.com) or Mncedisi Nqekeza (065 682 1452).
