MOSSEL BAY CRICKET NEWS - The SWD cricket team started playing Easterns yesterday, Thursday 14 February, in an important Cricket South Africa provincial competition three-day match.
SWD travelled to Willowmoore Park in Benoni for the three- and one-day matches.
With only two rounds of matches left for the Oudtshoorn-based team, coach Baakier Abrahams and his troops are keen to keep the momentum in a much improved season.
Obus Pienaar (with the bat) and Marcello Piedt (with the ball) are the key players and the success of the team is built around them, but support and match winning contributions from the rest of the team are crucial for the weekend.
In the limited over competition the clash on Sunday, 17 February will be decisive in SWD's aspirations to reach the final. They cannot afford to slip in any of their last two matches and a great contest is expected.
The SWD team is still without their front-line spinner, Tsepo Ndwandwa, who fractured his finger while playing for the SA Invitational XI against Pakistan in Benoni before the start of the test series against the Proteas.
The promising Travis Ackerman, a former York High pupil and brother of the Warriors batting hero Colin, who made his debut the past weekend against KwaZulu-Natal, is playing in the limited over match.
The 17-year-old Mesuli Vuba from Thembalethu, is making his first class debut for SWD after he made a huge impression in the three limited over matches that he played for SWD.
Travis Ackerman is playing for SWD.
The SWD team:
Three day: Letlotle Sesele (captain), Kirwin Christoffels, Jean du Plessis, Obus Pienaar, Brendon Louw, Yamkela Oliphant, Neil Hornbuckle, Marcello Piedt, Stefan Tait, Bailey Aarons and Mesuli Vuba.
For the limited over match, Herschell America and Travis Ackerman will replace Kirwin Christoffels and Bailey Aarons. Obus Pienaar is the one-day captain.
