In the girls category, Clucydia Kriel of St Blaize took line honours, while Ridgeview Primary School learners Nicolette Carelse and Talent Makoni were placed second and third.
Several hundred children participated in the 5km fun run and gave the marshals a run for their money with their enthusiasm. Some took to the streets in bare feet a la Zola Budd style, while others were neatly kitted out in their running club's colours. Irrespective, the youngsters all had fun and good work out to boot.
The PetroSA 5km Development Run, the National Oil Company's empowerment athletics meeting, was held in Mossel Bay on Tuesday 23 September as a PetroSA-sponsored race meeting. It is held annually and is meant to encourage young people to participate in athletics.
The pupils were joined at the development run by four international athletes from Ethiopia, Kenya and Eritrea. The athletes are part of a strong international contingent that will run the PetroSA Marathon on Saturday.
