Operation Fiela has seen nearly 10 000 arrests

NATIONAL NEWS - The government’s crimefighting campaign‚ Operation Fiela‚ has led to the arrest of nearly 10 000 people‚ the inter-ministerial committee on migration said yesterday.

The committee‚ led by Jeff Radebe‚ gave a briefing on the operation’s progress.

Speaking in Pretoria, Radebe‚ flanked by ministers Angie Motshekga‚ Bathabile Dlamini‚ David Mahlobo‚ Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, and deputy minister Luwellyn Landers‚ said the operation continued to yield positive results.

A total of 9 968 people had been arrested.

Operation Fiela was launched after widespread xenophobic violence in April.

Gauteng registered the highest number of arrests with 3 064‚ followed by the Western Cape with 1 264 and Mpumalanga with 1 225.
